Website Redesign Checklist

Use this checklist from the first planning meeting to thirty days after launch. Tick each item as you go.

01Goals and baseline

Write down the one main goal of the new site (calls, quotes, sales, bookings).
Record current traffic, leads and conversion rates as a baseline.
List the pages that bring in traffic, links and enquiries today.
Note what customers and staff dislike about the current site.
Set a budget, deadline and named decision-maker.

02Audit what you have

Crawl the current site and export every URL, title, description and heading.
Check which pages rank for your important searches.
Review speed and mobile usability.
Identify outdated, duplicate or thin pages.
Confirm who owns the domain, hosting and all logins.

03Content and structure

Decide which pages to keep, merge, rewrite or remove.
Draft a new sitemap organised around what visitors need.
Gather or write copy, photos, testimonials and case studies.
Plan one page per important service and location.
Prepare a clear call to action for every key page.

04Design and usability

Design for mobile first, then larger screens.
Check colour contrast and text size for accessibility.
Make navigation short, clear and consistent.
Keep forms as short as possible.
Test clickable prototypes with a few real customers.

05SEO protection

Keep URLs the same wherever possible.
Map every changed URL to its new equivalent with a 301 redirect.
Carry over titles, descriptions, headings and structured data.
Keep the staging site hidden from search engines until launch.
Prepare an updated XML sitemap.

06Launch and after

Test every form, phone link, checkout and integration.
Remove any noindex setting left from staging.
Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.
Confirm analytics and conversion tracking are working.
Check for broken links and redirect chains.
Monitor rankings, errors and leads daily for two weeks, then weekly.
