Local SEO on the North Shore: A Guide for North and West Vancouver Businesses

Two bridges shape how North Shore customers search and buy. Here is how businesses in North and West Vancouver can win the local searches that matter.

The North Shore behaves like its own market. Two bridges separate it from the rest of Metro Vancouver, and anyone who has sat on the Upper Levels at five o’clock understands why residents prefer to buy close to home. That preference shows up in search. People look for “electrician North Vancouver”, “flooring West Vancouver” or “physio Lonsdale”, and they reward businesses that are clearly local.

We are based in West Vancouver ourselves, so this is the market we know best. Here is what works.

Be precise about where you are

“North Vancouver” covers both the City and the District, and customers think in smaller pieces still: Lower Lonsdale, Lynn Valley, Deep Cove, Edgemont. In West Vancouver it is Ambleside, Dundarave, the British Properties, Caulfeild and Horseshoe Bay. Use the names your customers use, in normal sentences, on your homepage, contact page and service pages. If your shop is on Marine Drive in Ambleside, say so.

If you travel to customers

  • Set the service area in your Google Business Profile to the municipalities you genuinely cover, for example North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Bowen Island.
  • Say on your website whether you cross the bridges, and to where. “Serving the North Shore and Burnaby” is clearer and more believable than “serving the Lower Mainland”.
  • Mention practical details locals care about: ferry timing for Bowen Island, steep driveways, strata access in Lower Lonsdale towers.
  • Put response times in writing if speed is part of your offer.

Show local proof

North Shore customers ask neighbours before they search, and reviews are the online version of that conversation. Ask for them consistently and reply to each one. On your website, show finished work with the neighbourhood named (with the owner’s permission): a kitchen in Edgemont, a heat pump in Lynn Valley, a storefront in Dundarave. Real photos of recognisable places do more than any slogan.

Local organisations help too. The North Vancouver and West Vancouver chambers of commerce, community sports clubs and neighbourhood events all offer honest ways to be mentioned on local websites.

Make the website easy on a phone

Most local searches happen on a phone, often from a driveway or a job site. Your phone number should be tappable at the top of every page, your hours and address should be visible without scrolling far, and pages should load quickly on a mobile connection. Google’s Core Web Vitals give clear targets. A site that looks beautiful on a desktop but stalls on a phone will lose the enquiry to a plainer competitor.

Content ideas that fit the North Shore

  • Seasonal guides: preparing a home for the rainy season, snow on the upper roads, moss on roofs.
  • Explanations of local requirements you deal with, such as permits or strata rules, written in plain language.
  • Before-and-after project stories with the neighbourhood named.
  • Answers to the questions you hear on the phone every week.

What to track

Watch calls, direction requests and website clicks in your Business Profile, and in Google Search Console look at searches that include “North Vancouver”, “West Vancouver” or neighbourhood names. A small rise in these, month after month, matters more than a ranking for a broad phrase nobody local types.
