Google Business Profile Optimization Guide

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile is often the first impression. Here is how to make it work harder.

By Cloud9 Web Developments · September 21, 2026 · 4 min read

When someone searches for a service near them, the map results usually appear before the website links. Your Google Business Profile decides whether you appear there, and how convincing you look when you do. For many local businesses it brings in more enquiries than the website itself.

This guide walks through setting up and improving a profile step by step, with the mistakes that cause the most trouble and a simple monthly routine.

Step 1: Claim and verify

Search for your business on Google, or go to Google’s Business Profile help, and claim or create the listing. You will be asked to verify that you own it, usually by a code by phone, email, text or video. Use a business email or an account that is not tied to one individual, so access is not lost if someone leaves.

Step 2: Complete every field

  • Business name exactly as it appears in real life, with no keyword stuffing. Adding “Best Plumber in Vancouver” to your name breaks Google’s guidelines and can lead to suspension.
  • The most specific primary category, plus relevant secondary categories. Category is one of the strongest signals for what you appear for.
  • Accurate address or service area, phone number and website.
  • Correct opening hours, including holidays and special hours.
  • A clear description of what you do and where, written for customers.
  • Services and products, each with a short description.
  • Attributes that apply, such as accessibility features or payment methods.

Step 3: Show your business

  • Upload real photos of your work, team, premises and vehicles. Images of real jobs build more trust than stock photos.
  • Add new photos regularly; a profile with recent images feels active.
  • Use posts to share offers, news and events.
  • Include a short video if you have one.

Step 4: Reviews

Reviews affect both rankings and whether people choose you. Ask happy customers for a review soon after the job is done, and make it easy with a direct link. Reply to every review politely, thanking people who praise you and responding calmly and factually to complaints. Never buy or write fake reviews, and do not offer rewards where a platform forbids it. See our article on social proof and testimonials for more.

Step 5: Keep everything consistent

Match the name, address, phone and website details on your profile with your website and the main directories. Consistency helps search engines and AI assistants trust that the information is accurate. If you move or change your number, update every listing, not only the profile.

Service-area and multi-location businesses

  • If you travel to customers, you can hide your address and list the areas you serve. Be realistic about the area.
  • If you have several locations, each needs its own profile with its own address, phone number and page on your website.
  • Do not create profiles for addresses where you have no real presence, such as virtual offices; it breaks guidelines.

Connect the profile to your website

Link each profile to the most relevant page on your site, such as the location page, not always the homepage. Add UTM tags to that link so analytics show which visits came from the profile; our free UTM builder creates them. Your site’s location and service pages should repeat the same details as the profile.

Measure and improve

The profile’s performance reports show how people found you and what they did: calls, direction requests, website clicks and bookings. Review them monthly, note which photos, posts and services drive action, and do more of what works. For phone enquiries, use call tracking so you can tie calls to sources.

A simple monthly routine

  1. Add three to five new photos.
  2. Publish one post about an offer, a project or news.
  3. Check for new reviews and reply to all of them.
  4. Confirm hours, services and details are still correct.
  5. Review performance and note what changed.

Common mistakes

  • Keyword-stuffed business names.
  • Choosing a vague primary category.
  • Ignoring or arguing with reviewers.
  • Leaving old hours or phone numbers.
  • Never updating photos or posts.
