Vancouver SEO by Neighbourhood: Getting Found From Kitsilano to Mount Pleasant
People in Vancouver search by neighbourhood, not just by city. Here is how to show up for Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Yaletown and the areas you really serve.

Ask someone in Vancouver where they are going for dinner or who fixed their furnace and you rarely hear “Vancouver”. You hear Kits, Main Street, Commercial Drive, the West End. People search the same way. “Physio Kitsilano”, “dentist near Olympic Village” and “café Mount Pleasant” are everyday searches, and the businesses that appear for them are not always the biggest. They are the ones that have made their location obvious to Google and to customers.
This guide explains how neighbourhood search works in Vancouver and what a small business can do about it without tricks.
How Google decides who appears locally
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile and site match the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the place named in the search) and prominence (how well known the business is, including reviews and links). You cannot move your shop closer to a searcher, so the practical work is on relevance and prominence.
That matters in a dense city. Someone standing at Broadway and Cambie will see a different set of results than someone at Lonsdale Quay for exactly the same words. Your goal is not to rank everywhere. It is to be the clear, well-reviewed answer in the area you can honestly serve.
Name the neighbourhoods you actually serve
- State your neighbourhood and nearby landmarks in plain text on your homepage and contact page: “on West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano, two blocks from the beach” tells people and search engines far more than “conveniently located”.
- Use the names locals use. Mount Pleasant, Strathcona, Marpole and Kerrisdale are searched more often than ward-style or postal descriptions.
- If you travel to customers, list the neighbourhoods you cover and be realistic. A plumber who will not cross a bridge at rush hour should not claim the whole Lower Mainland.
- Keep your name, address and phone number identical on your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory.
Build pages that deserve to rank
A page for each neighbourhood only helps if it says something real. Useful neighbourhood content includes the work you have done there, parking and transit directions, how building types affect your service (heritage homes in Strathcona, concrete towers in Yaletown, laneway houses on the East Side), and answers to the questions those customers ask. Swapping the place name on copies of the same paragraph is what Google calls a doorway page, and it tends to hurt rather than help.
For most small businesses, two or three strong pages beat fifteen thin ones. Our guide to on-page SEO covers the basics every page needs.
Use your Google Business Profile properly
- Choose the most specific primary category that fits, then add secondary ones.
- Add real photos of your storefront and street so people recognise it when they arrive.
- Post updates when something changes: holiday hours, a new service, a move.
- Ask happy customers for reviews. Reviews that naturally mention the service and the area help both readers and relevance.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data to your site so your address, hours and service area are machine-readable. Our free SEO tools include a generator.
Earn local mentions
Prominence grows when other local sites mention you. Think business improvement associations, neighbourhood blogs, community centres, sponsorships of local teams and events, and suppliers who list their installers. One genuine link from a well-known Vancouver organisation is worth more than dozens of anonymous directory listings. See our guide to link building for small business for ways to earn them.
Measure it by area
In Google Search Console, filter queries by neighbourhood names to see which areas already bring impressions. In your Business Profile, watch calls, direction requests and the search terms report. Review monthly, and expect steady movement over a few months rather than overnight change.
