SEO Basics for Small Businesses: Where to Start

You do not need a huge budget to start with SEO. This beginner’s guide covers the fundamentals that matter most.

Search engine optimisation sounds technical, but the principle is simple: help the right people find you when they search, and give them a reason to choose you. A small business does not need a big budget to make real progress. It needs to get a handful of fundamentals right and then keep going.

This guide explains how search works, the five areas that matter most, a realistic first 90 days, and the mistakes that waste the most time.

How search works, briefly

Search engines do three things. They crawl, following links to discover pages. They index, storing and organising what they find. And they rank, deciding which pages best answer each search. Your job is to make it easy for them to find and understand your pages, and to make those pages genuinely the best answer for the people you want to reach.

The five areas that matter

  1. Technical health: a fast, secure, mobile-friendly site that search engines can crawl without problems.
  2. Content: pages that answer the questions your customers ask, in the words they use.
  3. On-page basics: clear titles, descriptions, headings and internal links on every page.
  4. Local presence: an accurate Google Business Profile, consistent listings and reviews, if you serve a local area.
  5. Authority: mentions and links from other reputable sites, earned over time.

Start with what customers search

List every service you offer and the phrases a customer might type to find it, including location terms such as “emergency plumber Burnaby”. Look at Google’s autocomplete suggestions and the “People also ask” boxes, and use the questions customers ask you on the phone. Our guide to keyword research without expensive tools shows a free approach. Aim for phrases that signal intent to buy or enquire, not just high volume.

One page per service

Give each important service its own page, with a clear heading, useful detail, proof and a way to get in touch. A single catch-all “Services” page cannot rank for ten different searches. If you serve several areas, add genuinely useful pages for each rather than swapping the city name on copies of the same text.

Get every page’s basics right

  • A unique title of roughly 50 to 60 characters with the main phrase near the front.
  • A meta description that invites the click.
  • One H1 heading and logical subheadings.
  • Descriptive image names and alt text.
  • Links to related pages on your own site, using descriptive link text.
  • A clear next step on every page.

Claim your Google Business Profile

If you serve customers locally, a complete, active profile with accurate hours, photos and reviews is often the fastest way to appear in map results. See our Google Business Profile guide for a step-by-step setup.

A realistic first 90 days

  • Month one: fix the obvious technical problems, verify your site in Google Search Console and complete your business profile.
  • Month two: rewrite or create pages for your top three to five services and set up tracking for calls and forms.
  • Month three: start earning reviews and local mentions, publish your first helpful articles and review what is bringing visits.

Myths to ignore

  • “Keyword stuffing works.” Repeating phrases unnaturally hurts readability and does not help.
  • “SEO is a one-time job.” Competitors, search engines and customers keep changing.
  • “Guaranteed page-one rankings.” No honest provider can promise this.
  • “More pages is always better.” Thin pages can drag a site down.

Measure the right things

Rankings are a means, not the goal. Track enquiries, calls and sales from organic search, plus impressions and clicks from Google Search Console. Review monthly and give changes time; most meaningful movement takes three to six months.
